The World Bank says that a large city like Karachi needs 15,000 buses, but at present, only 400 government buses are running in the city.

According to the 2019 report, Karachi needs 15,000 buses, but the number of modern public buses in the city is only 400. These include 300 buses of the People’s Bus Service, 80 of the Green Line, and 20 of the Orange Line.

Karachi’s population has crossed 20 million, but new buses are not joining at a pace that can meet the city’s needs.

According to the report, by 2017, the number of buses in Karachi had come down from 12,000 to less than 5,000, while the current situation is also not much different.

About 1.25 lakh people travel in these buses every day, while about 80,000 passengers travel on the Green Line and Orange Line every day.

According to transport officials, 139 new buses were to be added to the city, including five double-decker buses. These buses were supposed to arrive in July, but the matter is still pending.

There are about 3 lakh rickshaws and 36,000 registered Changchis in the city, but according to the Changchi Association, their number is 60 thousand.

There are also buses running in the city that should be in a garbage can instead of the streets.
